Sarah’s Dragon-Slaying Story: Miracle Worker at the Dry Cleaners

When I worked at the dry cleaner there was a fire at one of our facilities. It wasn’t a fire in our building; it was in the adjoining building, but we still had to shut down our store and move everything out of it.

I got a call from our owner when I was getting out of the bathtub on a Friday night. I was at home, getting ready to go to bed. Our owner was out of the country. He told me that he got a call from the store manager at our dry cleaning location next to the burning building. The firefighters had already put out the fire, but they wanted us to get in and clear out the dry cleaning store so the landlord could come in and make repairs to the two adjoining buildings.

I called a service to board up the plate glass window that the firefighters had to break while they were doing their job. Between the store manager and me, we called the staff members and told them to go to a different location the next day. Also, with one of our delivery trucks, we moved all of the dry cleaning orders to our alternate location. None of the dry cleaning orders were damaged—we got lucky!

We got hold of 56 customers and told them where to pick up their dry cleaning, at our alternate location. We gave them a 50 percent discount on their orders because of the disruption. This is one reason our clients are so loyal to us!

We got the refurbished dry cleaning location up and running again in two weeks. Our owner was back in the country by then and he said, “Sarah, you are a miracle worker.” I was really proud about that.

As Sarah’s Dragon-Slaying Story shows, Sarah is obviously not afraid to jump in and help out in a crisis. How can Sarah use this Dragon-Slaying Story in her job search?

Here is how Sarah condensed her Dragon-Slaying Story for use in a Pain Letter:

When our owner was out of the country and one of our locations was involved in a fire, I organized the relocation of the store, contacted 50+ customers, and arranged for repairs and reopening within two weeks to minimize our customers’ inconvenience.

Sarah sets the stage for her reader with “When our owner was out of the country.” Now we know that Sarah was on her own to solve a big problem! We can see that Sarah takes charge and does whatever she has to do to surmount an obstacle in her way.

Sarah doesn’t have to say “I’m a take-charge person” or “I’m a self-starter” in her resume, and she won’t! Her stories tell us more about who Sarah is and how she operates than her self-descriptions ever could.

Here is the same Dragon-Slaying Story condensed even further for use in Sarah’s Human-Voiced
